Every year teams from all around Australia come together to compete in a football tournament known as the ASFA Cup. The tournament has been dominated in recent years by powerhouses North Melbourne and Carlton. Here are my predictions for what will happen in this years instalment of the annual competition.
Last years champions Carlton entertained, dazzled and amazed on their way to their second ASFA Cup title in as many years. This year, I have them picked to go back to back to back. With key players such as Sami Nur and Mohammed Mohammed withstanding offers from Melbourne Eritrea United and remaining with the holders, Carlton can only get better as a large number of their key players are in the peak of their prime. Expect multiple time winners North Melbourne and last years finalists Kensington to challenge the champions on their quest for history.
Melbourne Eritrea United surprised everyone with their performance in last years tournament, reaching the Quarter Final stage despite not many people giving them a chance of winning a game as it was their first appearance in the tournament. This year the young squad is more experienced and with some new signings that improve the pace and skill in the forward half as well as solidify the defence. They have drawn a tough group with last years finalists Kensington facing them in their last match of the group, they should be looking to have already qualified by then to give themselves the best chance of advancing from the group stage for the second year running. I’m tipping them to go one better than last year and reach the semi finals. In order to achieve this they may need to do what they couldn’t do last year and top their group to avoid the group winners in the Quarter Final stage. Last year they ran into the eventual champions Carlton who emphatically end their campaign.
