SFV Women’s Round 2 – Team of the Week

Some close games this week as the women played out the second round of the season. The competition is more competitive than ever and it is great to see more and more girls joining the game.

Goalkeeper – Christine Fonua (Richmond FC)

Fonua is an extremely talented goalkeeper, rarely letting goals past her and often getting herself on the score-sheet.

Fonua scored a cheeky goal against Carlton Heart last week, and only let in one goal.

She is an expert at playing the 5th-man position and isn’t afraid to take players on, although it can backfire as she leaves her goal exposed.

Anchor – Penny Bakopolous (Richmond FC)

Bakopolous is a creative player who is also an extremely reliable defensive player for Richmond.

The loyal player who has been apart of the Championship side from day 1 is a pin-point defender but is also isn’t afraid to push up forward, nearly always creating attacking plays and scoring goals.

Flank – Guiliana Pavia (Balwyn FC)

Since transferring from Carlton Heart, Pavia has been a huge asset for Balwyn, firing in three goals against Thomastown FC in their 9-1 win.

With Pavia’s quick pace and lethal shot, she is one to watch this season and will no doubt cause a lot of havoc for most opponents she faces.

Flank – Seelia Dinou (FC Carlton Heart)

Although the Heart went down 5-1 to Richmond FC, Dinou put in a lot of tough challenges, stopping attacking plays and shots from her fierce opponents.

The long-time Carlton player has improved immensely over the last few seasons and puts her body on the line week in week out.

Her defensive play was crucial in last week’s game, winning an outstanding amount of tackles against a strong and talented side.

Target – Ili Jakab (Fitzroy FC)

There has been no stopping Jakab so far this season.

The Fitzroy star is one of the most versatile players in the league; last week she featured in the Team of the Week as anchor, and this week she returns as Target.

Jakab scored two crucial goals against Moreland FC, to help her side get within touching distance of their first ever win against the defending-champions.

Her work-rate is not to be underestimated, and it is one of her many great assets.
